Snow fall report by Kashmir Dispatch

A good early dump of snow!  Bashir phoned, and Omar emailed me, confirming a good foot of snow has fallen at Gulmarg.  Most welcome after the slow start to the 2010 and 2011 winters!

The following item is from yesterday’s “Kashmir Dispatch”.

Parts of Kashmir Valley including Gulmarg, Sonamarg and areas on Line of Control Friday received moderate to heavy snow while rains lashed plains, dampening the spirit of Eid shoppers in the Valley.

The Srinagar-Leh highway was also snowed in, forcing the closure of the 434-kilometer thoroughfare.

Director meteorological department here, Sonam Lotus told Press Bureau of India that more than one feet snow was recorded in Gulmarg, the world famous ski-resort in North Kashmir’s Baramullah district.

“Snow was reported along the Line of control including Sadnatop, Machil, Z-Gali and Gurez besides Sonamarg, Zojilla (on Srinagar-Leh highway),” he added.

Official sources said that more than 2-feet snow has accumulated near Captain Mode on the Leh-Srinagar highway. The thoroughfare was closed since early morning and any decision about the opening of the highway will be taken depending on the weather and condition of the road, they added.

October snowfalls reported by Kashmir Dispatch

First snowfalls in Kashmir!  The following item is from yesterday’s “Kashmir Dispatch”.October snowfalls
It’s about time for people living in the Kashmir valley and adjoining areas to unpack their woollens as the upper reaches of the region have received the first snowfall ahead of the approaching winter months.

The snowfall in upper reaches and light to moderate rains in plains has resulted in severe cold.

It was raining in Gulmarg while the upper reaches had fresh snowfall, a hotel owner told a news agency over phone from the world famous ski resort this afternoon.  He said the sky was heavily cloudy and it was raining on the slopes which experienced about five to six inches of first snowfall of the season.

However, he said, tourists from different parts of the country, particularly from West Bengal, are arriving at Gulmarg in large numbers, much to the delight of local traders.

Early falls reported by Kashmir Observer

More October snow in Kashmir – following item is from yesterday’s “Kashmir Observer”.

After a long spell of dry weather, punctuated by drizzle on a couple of occasions, Kashmir valley was lashed by rains while the upper reaches in its peripheries received the season’s first snowfall, bringing down the temperature and forcing people to put on winter clothing.

According to reports, the higher reaches of the valley, including Gulmarg, Tangmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and the mountain passes of Zoji La, Nasthachuna, Farkian and Rajdhani, experienced snowfall since last night while rains lashed the valley since Saturday morning.

The Met office here has forecast more rains and snow for the next 72 years. Talking to reporters, the Director of the Metrological Office, Sonam Lotus, said the upper reaches would receive more snow in the next 24 hours while moderate rainfall was expected across the valley.

Gulmarg’s new chair opens up the mountain

Gulmarg’s new chair is already up and operational!

The new lift is a detachable quad chair rising 499 vertical metres from a point immediately adjacent to the gondola mid-station to Marys Shoulder.   From Mary’s Shoulder, riders have three main options heading back to the bottom of the chair:

1) North-facing lee slopes of a good gradient, which tend to act as snow trap and should provide excellent quality riding throughout the winter.  Lower down, the run-out back towards the gondola flattens out, but with the new chair, we will hopefully see Gulmarg’s snow-grooming fleet put to regular use on the main mountain.

2) In a more north-easterly direction, riders can get some great powder shots in the steeps between scattered pines on the faces above the gondola-mid station.

3) A third option is ‘over the back of Marys’, a great scenic run, better in mornings given its easterly aspect, offering either a circuitous traverse back to the gondola, or a descent to Drang.  The vertical drop from the top of the chair to the village of Drang is over 1200 vertical metres.  This run is beyond the patrolled areas and should not be undertaken without due consideration of avalanche risks.

(taken in September 2011)

The new chair is expected to be a huge step forward for Gulmarg in terms of the lift-accessed terrain skiers and boarders are able to enjoy, on days when storms hinder operation of the upper gondola.

18 September 2011 also marks the official opening of the redesigned Gulmarg Golf Course, which is reputedly (outside of winter months) the highest ‘green’ golf course in the world.

The new lift is a detachable quad chair rising 499 vertical metres from a point immediately adjacent to the gondola mid-station to Mary’s Shoulder.

Snow leopards – Kashmir Wildlife # part 2

Unlike bears, snow leopards are active during winter.  It is a few years now since any of our guests have reported sightings, which was not uncommon during the 2006 and 2007 winters.  I haven’t seen one, just their big tracks in the snow behind Monkey Hill.  But I’ve heard one:  During dinner near the golf club, someone came into say a leopard was nearby.

We went out with torches, and as we reached the place where our guide was pointing to what was supposedly the leopard – impossible to make out in the dark – there was an unbelievably ENORMOUS roar from close quarters in the darkness.  Our small group turned and ran as fast as we could, the few hundred metres back through shin-deep snow, to the safety of the restaurant.  An adrenaline rush quite different to our daytime powder experience!

The article from the “Kashmir Dispatch”, quoted in yesterday’s blog, continues:

Meanwhile, Panic has gripped several areas of the district where a leopard has been on prowl since last week.

Press Bureau of India correspondent from north Kashmir a leopard joined by his cubs is on prowl in Cherwari area of the district. The presence of the wild beast has triggered panic in the village forcing the residents to stay indoors. The residents said they fear to venture out of their houses due to the constant fear of being attacked by the leopard.

“The women are also scared of going to farms. Despite repeated pleas, the wildlife officials have failed to ensure our safety. They should act before the beast takes on humans,” they said.

Wildlife Warden, north Kashmir, Mohammad Maqbool Baba said that a team has been formed to capture the wild beast or at least push it into the forests. He also urged the locals to refrain from attacking wild animals.

Meanwhile, a bear is stuck in a pond in Langate area of the neighboring Kupwara district. “A bear and tow cubs are stuck in a pond in Langate. Our men are trying their best to rescue them,” Wildlife Warden said.

Kashmir Wildlife # part 1

Skiers and Boarders will be glad to know that, like most of their kind around the world, bears in Kashmir hibernate during the winter months.  The following item is from this week’s “Kashmir Dispatch”.

A man was attacked and injured by a bear in Tangmarg area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police on Tuesday said. They said Abdul Rashid Malik; son of Mohammad Akbar Malik was attacked and injured by a bear at Kotipora in Tangmarg area of the district. The injured was shifted to sub-district hospital for treatment.

Gulmarg ski guest testimonial

Today’s report, again from guest Reid from Seattle:

“Hi Peter,

I’ll send you some more feedback later, but I understand you’ve been getting some other feedback on Fayaz.  Let me just say, he’s been an outstanding guide this week…and yes, there are some minor safety improvements that could be easily implemented (procedural) but he’s been incredibly responsive to our feedback, fun to be with and showed us the best possible terrain with limited snow as promised.  Today we went to Drang and it was a blast.  Everyday has been super fun and I think my body is going to be the only thing that lets me down first!

The hotel has been good too – good food, service outstanding, no problems, etc.  Transfers have been smooth with friendly service (Bashir took excellent care of us).  Perhaps since I’ve travelled to India so many times my expectations are different than some guests but everyone is doing a  good job for us.  I also think you were incredibly upfront in providing “full disclosure” and have been realistic in all your documentation which speaks highly of your integrity.

Thank you,

Reid”
