How exotic are Kashmir and Srinagar?

Kashmir is a region with a unique culture. Although Islam is the major religion here, historically the community has been a rich and harmonious mix of Islam, Buddhist, Hindu and to a lesser extent Sikh and Christian cultures.

Srinagar is beautifully situated on Lake Dal, and is the ancient capital of the Vale of Kashmir, a scenically splendid region surrounded on all sides by the Himalayas.

The city was founded in the 3rd Century (Before Christ) by Emperor Ashoka, the first conqueror and ruler of the Indian subcontinent. Christ (regarded in Islam as a prophet) is believed by Kashmiris to have visited their land after the crucifixion. Kashmiris believe that Christ ascended to heaven from a spot which is now the site of the Rozabal shrine in Srinagar's old city.
