Poma
Terrain
Gulmarg's three short poma surface lifts
are located on back-to-back slopes overlooking the snow
blanketed golf course. The pomas provide an excellent
variety of wide open beginner and intermediate practice
terrain. The area is the venue for Gulmarg's ski school
and race clinics.
The poma slopes are a few hundred metres
walk from the gondola, and can be a handy way of visiting
the Hotel Highlands Park or the Golf Club, which are
both located further along the golf course. In February
2005 the pomas were not open to snowboarders, due to
the resort's experience of "derailings" involving
novice boarders. The poma slopes are groomed on a regular
basis by Gulmarg's modern Kassbohrer machines.
The
18 hole golf course, one of the world's highest, is
Gulmarg's main venue for cross country ski training
and racing. Even more exquisite cross country terrain
is provided by eleven kilometres of summer walking tracks
built in British colonial times. These include forest
pathways rimming Gulmarg's mountain shelf with beautiful
views of both the valley below and surrounding mountains.
Modern cross-country ski gear is available from the
government hire shop.
For guests who would like to visit local
attractions (including Muslim, Christian, Sikh and Hindu
places of worship plus the Golf Club) on cross country
skis or snow-shoes, Ski Himalaya can arrange hire equipment
and a personal tour for you with local history guru
(and expert golfer!) Mr Feroz.
