Who are the Kashmir Powdercats?
Kashmir Powdercats is a partnership between
Australian Peter Robinson and Kashmiri Bashir Ahmad,
who first met in January 1999. The "Powdercats"
are our Kashmiri guides.
Bashir is one of Gulmarg's most well regarded
guides and has lived locally all his life. He is one
of only a few local guides with extensive winter guiding
experience (including acting as head guide for overseas
ski groups led by Australian ski instructor Mr Carl
Lyon, who visited Gulmarg on a regular basis prior to
the downturn of tourism to Kashmir in the 1990s).
Peter’s ski travels span five continents
and twelve countries. In August 2005 he is participating
in the southern hemisphere’s leading avalanche
safety course, the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council’s
Professional Avalanche Training Program at Otago Polytechnic.
Otago Polytechnic’s Training Program is modelled
on the Canadian Avalanche Association’s Ski Operations
Training Course.
