Season wrap up 2012/13

A big thanks to all the guests that blessed us with their presence this season. I’m sure that a great time was had by all. This season delivered some of the most stable conditions in recent years and with regular snowfalls, exploration of the whole mountain was possible. Runs to Drung were a regular occurence as were hiking to the top and enjoying runs to skiers left ending up on the army camp road. A big thank you to our accomodation hotels Grand Mumtaz and Hotel Heevan for keeping everyone comfortable and well fed without which some of those powder runs wouldn’t have been possible. I can’t forget our guiding team that kept everyone safe and kept the untracked runs coming. Have a great summer and see you all next year at Ski Himalaya.

Gulmarg market

It is hard to give up skiing time for shopping but experiencing the local market is a must before you leave Gulmarg.  There is the fruit shop, the equivalent of the corner shop(s), bakery and most importantly the J&K bank (ATM).

Drop into Khan Cloth House and meet with Mr Khan where you will be offered a cup of kahwa (Kashmiri tea) while you look over the merchandise.  Mention you are with Ski Himalaya and Mr Khan will be very excited.  Be tempted to take home a phreran or a Peter Robinson hoodie.

Snow predicted for Friday and Saturday.  Yahoo!

Dry dump

Overnight we were blessed with over a foot of dry snow. The chairlift opened at 10 am and there were faceshots for everyone. The Curfew in Srinagar has not effected Gulmarg and is only a problem with transports to the airport this has been overcome by travelling outside curfew hours. The weather forecast is calling for snowfalls on and off over the next few days.

The houseboat option

After your skiing adventure at altitude, the houseboats await at Lake Dal to complete your total Kashmiri experience.  You’ll be picked up in a shikara and taken to your houseboat for a night or two to recharge and reflect before your flight home.

Guests have been venturing all through the backcountry with there guides and are still skiing untracked lines. The forecast is calling for good snowfalls starting on the weekend just in time to freshen up the snowpack.

Massive Snowfall

Woke up this morning with well over a metre of new snow. It has really transformed the landscape cars are unrecognisable as they are just large lumps. The gondola was closed today so guests skiied down to Tangmarg through the trees the snow conditions were a little heavy in spots and very deep. With clear conditions to follow skiing should be fantastic when the Gondola opens.

Guide Training

We have been busy with some intense guide training this week. Starting with a level 2  first aid course, an avalanche awareness course and also lots of beacon training with on snow scenarios.

It has been snowing heavily since early this morning and is predicted to snow for another day or more, the snow is dry and getting deeper so looks like next week will bring sunny days and lots of untracked snow. The 2nd phase is closed today so guests are making the most out of the runs to Baba Reshi and through the trees on the first phase.
